If Calvin Harris met Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre in the early ‘90s.
Why You Should Care:
Vince Staples’ new album Big Fish Theory is here and his latest single “Big Fish,” is a somewhat-pop-take on the tribulations of growing up in Long Beach, CA. In true Vince fashion, the song plays on the themes of water and fish through its video and lyrics:
“Swimming upstream while I'm tryna keep my bread
From the sharks make me wanna put the hammer to my head.”
This isn’t to say that Vince has gone pop; if anything, Vince is as hard as ever with his quick quips and tactile delivery. But this song in particular rides with an ease, suitable for your summer 2017 playlist with the ever-smooth Juicy J providing the song’s hook (pun intended). This ease is offset by the song’s downtrodden but proud content and, in the video, images of himself beside a goldfish in the ocean with an empty fish tank overlooking the shore. Vince Staples never fails to make something special, and this song proves that Big Fish Theory is an album worth paying attention to.
